Today I want to talk about the different types of car guys. I've narrowed it down to two basic classifications. The first is the talker. He is easy to spot. He is always talking about what he used to have and how fast it was. The cars he used to have had trouble keeping the front wheels on the ground. He had to put a 6" layer of cement in the bed of his truck to get traction. His stuff was so quick that he could stick a $100 bill to the windshield and the G-forces during a quartermile run were so strong that you couldn't grab it. He says stuff like 3/4 or full race cam and naws. He is the guy that the second type of car guy is trying to get away from at a car show. Don't be this guy, also known as a poser. He doesn't want to race you because his car lives in the realm of legendary where the real truth is better to not be known. Especially if buddies are watching!
The second type of car guy doesn't need to brag. He is glad to take you for a ride in his car and show you how fast it really is. He knows what cam specs mean and he remembers them. He loves junkyards and sees potential hotrods all over the place. He knows what vehicle at the wrecker is most likely to have a posi-trac or a roller cam. At the car show he is interested in whats under every cars hood and finding out from the owner tips about their particular combination. If you race this guy you better have your act together and win or lose you can still be friends.
In conclusion I would like to say that everybody makes mistakes and we all do dumb things every now and then. For young guys just getting into the hobby I want to encourage you to have an older friend or mentor in the hobby who is like the second type of car guy. This hobby is much more fun when you can do it with someone. Also remember that your reputation usually sticks with you for life. If you don't tell the truth all the time, no one will believe you even when you are telling the truth. Another truth is that someone who will lie to you, will also steal from you given the opportunity.
thats all for today.
